Oct 25th, 2022 San Jose Earthquake

The largest San Francisco Bay Area earthquake, since the 2014 Napa Earthquake struck today, October 25th, 2022 at approximatly 11:42AM according to numerous sources. As of the writing of this article the shake was rated as a 5.1 Magnitude quake. The earthquake was centered near San Jose, CA. According to sources and new outlets many Northern Californians heard a large “boom” as the 5.1 magnitude quake shook 12 miles east of San Jose. Bay Area Rapid Transits [BART] Trains were held and other precautions taken. Limited damage posted on social media was reported. The quake was felt hundreds of miles away.

A brief aftershock of 3.6 magnitude hit around 3PM of the same day. Additional aftershocks could come from this initial quake.

The quake hit about 12 miles east of San Jose in an area nearer Seven Trees. Seven Trees is a neighberhood of San Jose, CA.

According to Annemair Baltay a USGS seismologist, the shaking was “slightly less than our models expected for” a quake such as this. Baltay believes that the shaking was part of the Calaveras fault. This fault is often considered part of the San Andreas Fault. According to the Hill, the Calaveras fault caused a large earthquake in 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake which was a 6.2 quake.

Over 100,000 Californians received advanced notifications via the MyShake app. The MyShake app is an ‘early warning’ system of sorts that may warn individuals seconds before a specific quake event.
