June 2022 Quake in Georgia
An early morning June Earthquake jolted Georgia on June 18th 2022. The Earthquake was a 3.9 Magnitude and was located 7KM east of Stillmore Georgia, this according to the USGS. This is more or less in the center of the state. This was the second day in a row for earthquakes in this area. The previous day a much smaller quake was also detected. The population of Stillmore is just over 700 people according to the 2020 census.
Unusual Locations of Earthquakes or Not?
This is an unusual location for an earthquake, as most Americans expect quakes to only happen on the west coast of the United States. However earthquakes do commonly happen throughout other parts of the interior of the US, including the MIssouri region. A nearby region in South Carolina has experienced numerous recent earthquakes. Earthquakes can happen throughout the United States.
Details about the June 2022 Georgia Earthquake:
The earhquake was located less than 1KM below the surface. The USGS measurements of it, currently are as a 3.9 magnitude quake. The quake is located in the center of the State of George. It is over 100 miles from Atlanta. According to NBC News “at least 1294” people felt the quake on this given Saturday morning. That number though is likely to be a signficant undercount, simply because of the method of data collection concerning the event.
Frequency of Quakes in Georgia:
Although not considered a signficant earthquake it is considered to be a light quake. According to NBC, “Temblors of this magnitude tend to occur in the state about every 3 to 5 years.”
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not expected to create much damage. At the time of this blog post, no reports of significant damage had been collected.
Consumers though should still consider taking measures to protect themselves and their property from earthquake damage, even if you do NOT live in so called earthquake country.
